Just loved reading this and so clever of you to improvise with the gold earring!

As to your son in his tuxedo: Our oldest son will forever hold it against me that when he was six or so, I made him wear lederhosen (who remembers where we got them?) to a picnic we were hosting. I had erased this from my memory, but later came upon a picture of him in them, so wrote him a formal "Guilty As Charged" letter. Ah well, it's good for character- and empathy-building to occasionally feel out of place. xxx

Guilty your honor! We are the parents who hosted the Eighteenth you speak of and we remember thinking that your son was "molto fico" in his “casual” tuxedo….

OMG. I could just imagine. All of it. Great storytelling! Reminded me of a day that mortified me when I delivered my first grader daughter to school wearing a cowgirl Halloween costume (the Toy Story character) because the kids were supposed to dress for “Western Day”. Not until we arrived at school did I realize that meant wearing jeans and a red bandana, not a Halloween costume, and it was too late to go home and change. I know she felt embarrassed but she stuck it out all day being the only kid in a costume. That was 20 years ago and I still feel mortified when I think of it but she laughs about it. Maybe that awkward day is what soon after led her into performing arts and the ability to roll with the punches. Thankfully! Oy vey! I love your writings, Sheila!

Wonderful tales that had me lol’ing in the taxi as I read them. The two that got me were the flying profanities as the realization dawned that Luca was driving the Maserati in a dune buggy parade, and the surprising and unwelcome appearance of the boob. Hilarious! Keep ‘em coming.

LOVED this, Sheila. The pics were great and the stories too. Vogue! I saw the earring on your dress before reading the explanation and I thought it was just a chic detail on a beautiful dress. I loved the description of the kindergarten teacher and her shoe change. Man I feel lazy now! (This also explains so much about my husband who spent those formative years in Rome and NEVER is seen out of a button down shirt).
